WORKING HUNTER TRAINING SHOW (Ponies and Small Horses) – 25th February
The IPS Northern Area committee have been busy putting together a busy schedule for 2012, to include WH Training, the usual IPS Spring, Summer and Annual Shows, Annual Dinner etc. Further details on all of these will follow in due course.
The IPS NA year is kicking off with a Working Hunter Training Show on Saturday, 25th February at Lusks Equestrian Centre commencing at 9.30am sharp. There is a full schedule of WH and Performance classes from the complete beginner class of Lead Rein to the more experienced 1m class. Heights of fences range from 50cm to 100cm and as this is a training show, this will allow riders the opportunity to school novice ponies and introduce new combinations over a variety of heights, whilst at the same time allowing existing combinations to train.
The Committee is excited to introduce 2 new classes; one for young inexperienced 4 & 5yr old ponies and the other a Small Horse WH class for horses not exceeding 158cm. Riders of course must be of correct age for height of pony and riders in the horse class must be over 18yrs on 1st January of current year. WH Ponies must be plaited, M&M ponies must be unplaited. Entry fees are a keen £7 per class for members and £10 per class for non members. The full schedule is available to download below. For any further information please contact the Show Secretary on 07725146997.

IPS NA Awards Dinner a huge success in the NA calendar!
The IPS (NA) 2011 Annual Awards Dinner was held on Saturday 19th November in the Stormont Ballroom of the Stormont Hotel. Approximately 160 people attended the dinner and it was an extremely successful event, not only for the many IPS members and non members who attended, but in particular for the organising committee. Everyone enjoyed the venue, the dinner, the flowing presentation of awards, the photos, line dancing and dancing after. The night was a success with numerous rosettes, cups and special awards being presented to all worthy winners. There were also a number of new cups presented and thanks must go to all those who presented these new awards, in particular Alison Dugan and Gillian Creighton, so a big thank you to them!
Congratulations and thanks go also to the team at the Stormont Hotel for the excellent meal, professional service, chocolate fountain on arrival (well received by the younger members!) and venue facilities. After the most enjoyable meal, it was straight into the awards presentation. The Northern Area Chairperson, Julie Corbett, welcomed all members and invited guests. She thanked everyone for their support at IPS (NA) shows during 2011 and wished everyone success in 2012.
National Awards
As always the first presentation of the night was the National Awards, which are always eagerly sought by our members. Julie Corbett passed on her congratulations to each of the Points Winners on their many successes.
Younger and older members alike were very successful. Young Emily Jayne McPolin had a very successful night winning no less than 5 red rosettes. Peadar McLaughlin, Rachel Moore, Eva McClurg, Christina Devine and Shannon Corbett all won a number of awards. Elaine Sherrard, who unfortunately was on holidays, picked up awards for yet another year for her Parkhill ponies for the SP and SHP classes.
The Carlton Cup, presented by the McPolin family, for the 143cm WHP with the hightest national points was this year awarded to Holly McClenaghan and her pony Bit of a Pickle. The Parkhill Cantona Cup for the Irish Bred 133cm SHP with highest points was awarded to Hannah Thompson, riding Elaine Sherrard’s Parkhill Uptown Girl.
Provincial Awards
It was great to see a number of different members taking the Provincial Awards this year and to see some of our younger riders also featuring - Peadar McLaughlin won the WH cup, Emily Jayne McPolin won the Mini cup and Charlotte Smiley won the M&M cup. For another year Elaine Sherrard won the Breeding and Youngstock award.
Points Pony of the Year
With her success in the National Awards, Elaine Sherrard and her pony Parkhill Little Arioso won the title of overall Points Pony of the Year. This was the second year that Elaine has won this prestigious title.
Silver League Awards
The Silver League is open to both members and non-members and placings are hotly contested with points awarded at the Area Shows and the Ballynahinch Charity Show. Awards were presented for 1st – 4th place for each of the classes, which throughout the League had been very well attended and it is hoped that this will be the case again during 2012.
Rachel Moore was very successful in this awards section, winning all the Novice titles - WHP with her pony Fortview Toyboy; SP with Ninfield Dream On and SHP with Timahoe Robin Hood. Shannon Corbett won the Intermediate WH and Connemara Challenge cups, while Alexandra Ryan won the Open WH and M&M WH cups.
The NA is also thankful to a number of people who presented new cups to the society for this section. The first was the First Year First Ridden Cup, presented by Alison Dugan and won by Jessica Murphy, who had travelled all the way from Wexford to attend the Awards Dinner. The second was presented by Gillian Creighton for the Tiny Tots section. This was won by Aaron Dugan.
Championship Show Awards
The Championship Show in July 2011 seemed a long way off, but on the day results were flowing and this year the cups were won by a variety of riders from both North and South of the border. It was great to see Aine Geoghegan, who had travelled from Co Wicklow for both the show and the awards dinner, winning the Intermediate WHP and also the M&M Ridden Cup. Rachel Moore was again very successful in this section, winning no less than 4 Championship Cups. Four new cups, named the Jim Lilley Perpetual Cups, were awarded to the four Supreme Champions at the show – Jodie Creighton, Sarah Beers, Shannon Corbett and Rachel Moore.
Special Awards
Talent is something that we in the Northern Area certainly have and the NA committee presented awards in recognition of this:
Highest Placed IPS Member on an Irish Bred SHP competing overseas
This was awarded to Rachel Moore and Heartlands Secret Weapon, who were 2nd at the Royal Highland Show.
Highest Placed Irish Bred SP competing overseas
This award was presented to Jodie Creighton riding J&T Harper’s Ravara Benjamin Bunny. This combination was placed 5th at HOYS.
Dublin Horse Show
This year one NA member won two Championships at the Dublin Horse Show and the Committee wished to acknowledge that. Rachel Moore on her young pony Timahoe Robin Hood won both the SHP and Junior Side Saddle Championships. This was a brilliant result for Rachel.
HOYS Awards
The Northern Area Committee were also delighted to be able to present 6 awards for riders competing at HOYS 2011 – Rachel Moore, Fortview Toyboy, 15H WHP; Jodie Creigthon, J&T Harper’s Ravara Benjamin Bunny, 12.2H SP; Rachel Maybin, Fantastic Mr Fox, Small Hunter; Sasha Bloch, Inspector Morse, 14H WHP; Rebecca Gill, Moorhall Vivacious, 13.2H SP; Joe Clelland, Budore Sir Percy, Cuddy Supreme Inhand. An excellent achievement for all these riders!

Most Improved Riders
A highlight of the awards evening is the acknowledgement of those riders who have made significant progress during 2011. The Most Improved Flat Work Award was won by 2 capable young riders, Ellie McDonnell and Megan Dumigan, who have both successfully progressed in their ridden style this year. The Most Improved Working Hunter Award was presented this year to a well deserved Anna Kelly.
IPS Championship Show Cavan 2011
This year saw much success for the NA members at the Championship Show in Cavan and the fantastic atmosphere amongst NA competitors and familes at the show was noticeable, and certainly not without reason! The Supreme Championship went to Rachel Maybin on her new intermediate pony Fantastic Mr Fox, while a well deserved Eimear McMahon won the overall Tom Robinson Gold Cup (competing in dressage, WH and SJ). Awards were presented to these 2 young riders in recognition of these exceptional results.
This year the NA were delighted to enter 2 teams into the Young Judges competition on the first night of the Championship Show. There were a total of 6 teams and both NA teams did extremely well and the NA were absolutely delighted when, for the first time ever, one of the NA teams were announced winners! The winning team was made up of Rachel Moore, Kathryn Smiley and Charlotte Smiley and Steven Perry presented them each with a sash and award.
For the first time in a long time at Cavan, an Inter Area Team Competition was held and there were 20 teams in total entered. NA members were very excited by this prospect and we were delighted to be able to put forward 6 NA teams under the watchful eye of Steven Perry (who had stepped in in place of R McCabe). There was much excitement during the 3 days at Cavan as each member of each team competed to accumulate points for their team. The finale was held on Saturday night and it was with a great roar from the NA followers that one of the 6 teams were announced Champions – that team was made up of Megan Dumigan, Hannah Dumigan, Lauren Finn and Shannon Corbett. The NA committee were proud to be able to present each member with a framed team picture and sash. This was a fantastic result for all 6 teams who had competed at the competition and in particular of course this team! Well done Megan, Hannah, Shannon and Lauren!
Chef d’Equipe Award
An award was presented to Steven Perry for stepping in as Chef D’Equipe at Cavan this year and Julie Corbett thanked Steven for his hard work, organisation and support for every team member. Steven had managed to get to every class that every team member had entered to give encouragement!
Personality of the Year Award
Without doubt the highlight of the Awards Night was the presentation of the ‘Personality of the Year Award’. This was awarded to a very special person, who never fails to attend a show with the family, is always immaculately dressed, ready long before the class is about to begin, but somehow can also then miss the class! Grumpy ponies is also his speciality! This year the award was presented to Jason McPolin. Jason accepted this award in the spirit that it was meant and came to the stage to accept his award from Susan Perry to rapturous applause and to the tune of Benny Hill. This was a great way to end the award presentations.
Julie Corbett thanked the many people who had contributed to the success of the Northern Area in 2011 and also thanked the committee for their continued support and help.
Steven Perry, Vice Chairperson of the IPS NA, rounded off the evening by taking the opportunity to thank Julie Corbett, Chairperson, for all her hard work and dedication throughout the year. He also thanked and congratulated every member of every team that had competed at Cavan and confirmed how proud he had been of each and every one of them.
The Committee would like to thank Prime Photography for taking all the photos on the evening.
The IPS Northern Area would like to wish all its members and competitors a successful showing season in 2012.
